The word “Navratri” means “Nine Nights”. This Chaitra Navratri is 9 days festival of Hindu which is celebrated to worship Goddess Durga with faith. It is an ancient festival celebrated in honour of Maa Bhagwati on 28th March 2017 and also called Vasant Navaratri in northern part. In India Navratri celebrate twice a year -once in onset of spring season-Chaitra (March/April) and the other in Ashwin (Commencement of Winters) (September/October). All Hindus worship and doing Nav Durga Puja according to vidhi with great enthusiasm and dedication.

  • Moli, red sacred thread
  • Rice
  • Supari (Areca nuts)
  • Paan (Betel leaves)
  • Cloves
  • Cardamom
  • Kumkum (vermilion)
  • Gulal
  • Ganga water or plain water in Kalash (pitcher)
  • Fresh and washed mango leaves
  • Fresh grass
  • Sandalwood
  • One coconut
  • Roli, red sacred powder for tilak

First Day: 28 March 2017, Ghatsthapana, Shailputri Puja

On the first day of Chaitra Navaratri that is March 28th 2017 we worship Goddess Shailputri. Ghatasthapana Muhurta is a significant ritual as it is the beginning of festival of Chaitra Navaratri. In this puja you must wake up early in the morning, take bath and wear fresh clothes. You need some fresh flowers i.e. rose, jasmine or red hibiscus, intense sticks and a matchstick. You also offer some fruits, sweets like peda and Ladoo. This Ghatsthapana, Shailputri Puja is also identified by Kalash Sthapana or Kalashsthapana. The Murat time of Ghatasthapana Muhurta is 08:26 to 10:24 am.

  • Om Devi Shailputryai Swaha (ॐ देवी शैल्पुत्र्यै स्वाहा) (108 times recitation)
  • Vande Vanchhit Laabhaay, Chandrardhkritshekharaam | Vrisharudham Shooldharaam Shailputriim Yashaswinim ||

Second Day: 29th March 2017, Chandra Darshan, Brahmacharini Puja

Worshipping of Brahmacharini will be done on the second day of Navratri i.e. March 29th. Brahmcharini is the form of Maa Durga when she was incarnated as the daughter of King Daksh. This is done to bring happiness and prosperity in the life.

Mantra For Brahmacharini Puja:

  • Om Devi Brahmcharinyai Namah (ॐ देवी ब्रह्म्चरिण्यै नमः) (Do 108 times recitation)
  • Dadhaanaa Kar Padmaabhyaamakshmala Kamandaloo | Devi Prasidatu Mayi Brahmcharinyanuttamaa.

Third day: 30 March 2017, Gauri Tritiya, Chandraghanta Puja

The third day falls on March 30, 2017. On this day Goddess Chandraghanta is worshipped and the word Gangaur also known as Gauri Tritiya. In this Chandraghanta, Maa Durga rides on Tiger with holding a Gong (big bell) and adorned with half moon on head.

Fourth Day: 31 March 2017, Chaturthi, Kushmanda Puja

In Chaitra Navaratri festival, fourh day falls on March 31, 2017. On this fourth day Kushmanda Puja and Varad Vinayaka Chauth puja is celeberated with full dedication and vidhi. The word “Varad” means “asking God to fulfill any desire one has”. You need to worshipped Goddess Kushmanda with red coloured flowers as it is the favorite one.

Fifth Day: 1st April 2017 ,Lakshmi Panchami, Skandamata Puja

Lakshmi Panchami, Skandamata Puja taken place, When Goddess Durga takes incarnation of Parvati and gave birth to Lord Skanda or Kartikeya.

  • Om Devi Skandmatayayi Namah (ॐ देवी स्कन्दमातायै नमः)( 108 times recitation)
  • Sinhaasangataam Nityam Padmaanchit Kardwayaa | Shubhdaastu Sadaa Devi Skandmata Yashaswini ||

Sixth Day: 2nd April 2017, Shashthi, Katyayani Puja

The sixth day taken place on April 2, 2017 as on this day Goddess Durga took incarnation as Katyayani, to destroy demons as Indian Rishi Katyayan had done mediation. The name of the daughter Goddess Durga is Katyayani.

Seventh Day: 3rd April 2017, Saptami, Kalaratri Puja

On the seventh day Goddess Kalaratri is worshipped with night-blooming Jasmine flowers. It is very powerful and ferocious forms of Maa Parvati so as to eliminate the darkness from the lives of her pure-hearted devotees.

Eighth Day: 4th April 2017, Ashtami, Sri Durga Ashtami, Mahagauri Puja

On the eighth day of Chaitra Navaratri festival, Goddess Mahagauri is worshipped. Goddess Mahagauri rides on bull, holds trident and damru in hands. Also wears white clothes and her face reflecting like white moon.

Ninth Day: 5th April Ram Navami, Siddhidatri Puja

On the ninth day of Chaitra Navaratri festival, Ram Navami is celebrated. In this goddess Parvati enters in half body of Lord Shiva. Siddhidatri Maa seated on Red Lotus and has Conch, Chakra, Lotus and Gada in her four hands.
