In case of 2-mark MCQs, the candidate will be penalised 2/3 mark for wrong attempt

For questions that aren’t attempted, zero marks will be awarded.

There is no negative marking for numerical answer type (NAT) questions.

Get Past Year Papers: GATE Previous Year Question Papers

Exam Pattern for Various Papers:

  • There will be carried 15% marks of total marks, General Aptitude section will contain 15% marks and rest of the 70% marks will be contained by the core subject of the paper in the papers of AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF and XE, Engineering.
  • General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the total marks and remaining 85% marks will be carried by the core subject of the paper in the papers AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH and XL.
  • The General Aptitude section 5 questions of 1 Mark and 5 questions of 2 marks.
  • Question paper other than GG, XE and XL will contain 25 questions of 1 mark and 30 questions of 2

GATE Exam Pattern – XL Paper:

  • This paper will be from chemistry subject which is important to attempt by every student. There will be total 25 questions comprises 15 questions.
  • Beside chemistry section, there will be another section which is also important to attempt.
  • There will be contains 20 questions of total 30 marks.

Types of Questions in GATE 2018:

Multiple Choice QuestionsNumerical Questions
These questions carry 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections.These questions carry 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections.
All the questions will be objective in nature with a choice of four answers, out of which the candidate has to mark the correct answer(s).The answer given for these questions will be real numbers.
Questions will contain 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections.All the questions are compulsory to attempt by candidates.
Candidates must key in the answer using the virtual keypad (The keyboard of the computer will be disabled).

GATE New Marking Scheme:

General Aptitude (GA) Questions:

  • This is very important section for attempt to all papers.
  • The GA section will contain 5 questions carrying 1 mark each (sub-total 5 marks) and 5 questions carrying 2 marks each (sub-total 10 marks).
  • The GA question will be of total 15 marks

For Numerical Questions:

  • There is no negative marking applied for Numerical questions

For Multiple Choice Questions:

  • There will be negative marking.
  • There will 1/3 mark will be cut for attempt a wrong answer.
  • For 2-mark questions, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer

Design of Questions in the GATE 2018 Paper:

  • The questions are designed to examine the following abilities of a contender:
  • Recall: Based on facts, principles, formulae or laws of the discipline of the paper
  • Comprehension: These questions will test the candidate’s understanding of the basics of his/her field
  • Application: Candidate is expected to apply his knowledge either through computation or by logical reasoning
  • Analysis and synthesis: Candidate has to present with data, diagrams, images etc. that require analysis before a question can be answered.
